Banquet Speaker

Mike Chandler, a member of the Pacific Northwest Region, living in a suburb of Vancouver, BC, will be the guest speaker at the Siskiyou Summit 2012 Awards Banquet on Saturday evening. Mike's presentation is titled "Tales of the Iron Road" and is an insightful, and sometimes humorous, look at railroading from someone who worked his way up the ranks of one of the major railroads in North America.

Mike began his career with Canadian National Railway Co. on March 1, 1966, at their Vancouver Diesel Shop as a machinist apprentice. Over the next two decades, Mike worked at various diesel shops across the western two-thirds of the system, rising to the position of Manager of the CN diesel shop in Calgary. In 1986, Mike was transferred to System Headquarters in Montreal as Senior Technical Officer for the Motive Power Department. Mike retired from CN in 2002.

A skilled photographer, Mike is the author of Westbound, A Portfolio of Western Railroading, (Bonaventure Press, 1991). A skilled craftsman, Mike took Best in Show at the 2004 NMRA National Convention in Seattle, for his scratchbuilt Proto:48 model of an NKP Berkshire. Mike has authored a number of recent articles on scratchbuilding structures in Railroad Model Craftsman. Mike hosts regular Time Table and Train Order operating sessions on his Midland Western RR, where his dispatcher is actually located 1,000 kilometers away.
