Awards Banquet

Chairperson: Vacant

The Iron Horse Express 2013 Annual Awards Banquet will be held Saturday night from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. There will be a Social Hour from 6:00 to 7:00 PM for everyone to renew old friendships and make new ones. The Banquet is included in all fares, except Day Fares.

Banquet Speaker

Our Guest Speaker will be Mrs. Beverly Lane, who will speak on electric railroads in Contra Costa County before the arrival of BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). You may not have realized it, but at one time both steam and electric railways served Danville and the surrounding San Ramon Valley. Electric railroads linked cities and farms around here until 1957. Modern BART trains roll along the same right of way that earlier Sacramento Northern trains followed. Those early trains simply lost out to automobiles and trucks that were more versatile.

Some of those electric trains moved ship parts to shipyards in Richmond during WW II, while the "Produce Cannonballs" delivered huge quantities of fruit and vegetables from Contra Costa County ranches to Oakland. For decades passengers rode from Oakland and eventually all the way to Chico. For ten years they even rolled into Alamo and Danville.

Mrs. Lane is eminently qualified on this topic, currently serving as Curator of the Museum of the San Ramon Valley, located in the ex-Southern Pacific Depot in Danville. She is also President of the Contra Costa County Historical Society. Mrs. Lane has been a member of the East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors since 1994 and has been recognized nationally for her role in the creation of the Iron Horse Regional Trail through Central Contra Costa on the original Southern Pacific R-O-W.

She also served as a member of the Danville Town Council and was Danville Mayor for 3 terms. A graduate of Occidental College (BA) and California State University, Hayward (MPA), Beverly has authored a pamphlet on Contra Costa County’s electric railroads, as well as books on the 150 year history of Danville and a pictorial history of the San Ramon Valley.
